Dr. Natália Marhefková, Ph.D., from the team of Assoc. Prof. Michal Dubský, published a study in Sleep Medicine focusing on the effect of type 1 diabetes (T1DM) on sleep duration and timing.
The research compared 879 patients with type 1 diabetes and 1757 individuals without diabetes from the Czech population. The results showed that T1DM patients have a later chronotype and a significantly higher social jetlag – the difference between sleep duration on workdays and free days – compared to non-diabetic subjects.
The study further highlights the link between circadian misalignment and poorer glycemic control. These findings suggest that circadian factors should be considered in the clinical management of type 1 diabetes.
The research was conducted in collaboration with experts from the Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Prof. Alena Sumová, Dr. Martin Sládek) and the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Mgr. Jan Klusáček, Dr. Michaela Röschová).
The publication was supported by the National Institute for Research on Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases – CarDia.
