On Wednesday, April 23, another lecture from the series The Human Body in Health and Disease took place at the Czech Academy of Sciences. This time, experts focused on the topic “Obesity – The Killer of the 21st Century.”
The event welcomed two leading Czech experts on obesity – Prof. Jaroslav Kuneš from the Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Prof. Martin Haluzík from the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM). In their presentations, both specialists shared the latest scientific findings on the causes and impacts of obesity, complemented by insights from their daily medical practice.
The lecture offered a comprehensive perspective on obesity as one of the most serious health issues of our time. With the growing number of people who are overweight or obese, the importance of prevention and effective treatment continues to rise. According to current data, more than one-third of women (36%) and nearly half of men (49%) in the Czech Republic are overweight. Obesity affects 21% of men and 18% of women.
