
A team from the Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences is investigating why people living at high altitudes have a lower risk of heart attack. Researchers Petra Alánová and Anna Jelínková Jokelová have shown in mouse models that low oxygen levels activate the protein HIF1α, which triggers mitophagy — a process that removes damaged mitochondria. This makes the heart tissue more resistant to heart attack.
